The Second Joyful Mystery

by Fr. Francis Martin

Once David placed the Ark
on the threshing floor Obed-edom.
At Ephrata we heard the news,
it is found in the place of Yearim.

Elizabeth too walks on hallowed ground,
feeling in her body the truth
of God’s covenant ready to be born.

Hark he comes!
My beloved on the hills
coming to me
wheat for the threshing floor.
A voice greets me
bringing the scent of the Word,
and the infant within me leaps for joy.
O who am I that the Ark of my Lord should come to me!
O who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to me!
Blessed is that woman who believed
the promise
new resting in her womb.

They kiss,
and their bodies, brimmed with life,
touch gently.

My soul sings out his greatness,
my spirit leaps in joy
for God my Savior.

He looked with mercy
on his lowly servant,
and all to come will count me blessed.
The Mighty One worked wonders in me,
I bow to his Name most holy.

Every generation knows his mercy
that blesses those who fear him.
He has bared his mighty arm
and all the proud are scattered.
He put the great ones down from their thrones,
and the poor ones he exalted.

He has filled the hungry with all that is good,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has taken up Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy.

This he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his seed
now planted deep within me.
