The Third Sorrowful Mystery

by Fr. Francis Martin

They wanted to make a fool of you,
to break your spirit.

There was no one to console you.

You embraced
the humiliation and shame
that fills our hearts because of sin,
and you willed to be in solidarity
with all those who are mocked
and made to feel their helplessness.

What strength was yours, Jesus,
to enter into the depths of weakness
and meet everyone who must pass this way,
sinner, fool,
mentally anguished and shunned.

We are not alone in our humiliation,
you are with us.
Give us eyes to see you
in all those who suffer so.

Then one day we will hear your voice:

“I was mocked
because I was weak
and my weakness frightened those
who clung to the illusion of power.”

“Yet you stood by me
and helped me.”

“Come,
blessed of my Father.”
